Hot Rod Horror Garage - Reviews an album; Calamitiez

Hey there kats and kittens, hows about a bit of an album review?  Oh yeah, that sounds nice, doesn't it? Right then, lets get to it.

Doc Wrench and myself welcome you to the first of however many reviews we end up doing!

First up, Calamitiez, a band out of Barcelona. Were reviewing their self titled disc, you heard one of the tracks on HRHG#9 (Toxic Love). This one has had half a dozen or more spins out in the garage already and I've barely had it two weeks. Their sound mixes a good spoonful of punk in with some bass slapping psychobilly, throw in a bloody spattering of horror themed songs and you have yourself a nice plateful of ear candy.

Heh, pipe down Mark, these guys don't want some wine snob review. They want to know that the Calamitiez keep the pace up and the rock rippin' your ears solid through almost the entire album.  Hell, they dont even give y'all a breather with a slower song until track 11.  So all y'all keep that in mind, y'all gotta wreck for 10 songs before you get a beer break!  Make the sucker quick too, they get right back on the gas and kickin' ass on the next song.

Come on Doc, thats not telling them anything other than when to get a beer. They are grown ups, and know when the hell to get their own damn beer.  Its more important to know that the mix is done really well, the bass slaps come through clear and punchy without droning over the great crunchy guitar riffs. The vocals are strong throughout the album and the band plays tight. Y'all can really crank the hell out of this disk and wont end up with a shit heap of musical sludge.

Look at you and your fancy words... of course they can crank it up, you just turn the damn knob to 11. But first, they gotta get their mitts on it.  So if all y'all point your webwinder click-a-majigger over here... Raucous Records you can get this bad boy on CD.

Good call Doc, there are other places to buy it too I'm sure, but Raucous always has a damn good selection of great music. Heres a video, the quality leans towards the "recorded on a potato" side, but you get the idea. Calamitiez "Army of the Underworld"   A few tracks that really get my wreck up on this disc: The Man Who Cannot Die, Covering Your Face, and Toxic Love.
Well, that wraps up this little experiment.  Let me know what you think; should we shut the hell up or give this review thing another spin sometime?

Keep the skinny pedal down, and and speakers begging for their lives!

Puttin' on the cans, mixing up a little something so all y'all can shake your cans!

Well well well, that Nitro-shine concoction Doc mixed up in #8 has really put a fire under us here in the garage.  So the wrenches are out, the compressor is running, and were gonna put some wheels on another episode this week.

Valentines day is nearly upon us. Lets get serious for a moment; whether or not you will be celebrating Valentines day depends on a number of complex social factors. Such variables as your culture acknowledging the day as special, relationship status, and more... bah who am I kidding.  You are either doin' it or not *wink wink, nudge nudge*! Either way you need some music.  Preferably something that kicks ass, because lets be honest 'billies, romantic sappy crap isn't usually our gig.  So grab a partner, or not, and get ready for another batch of Nitro-shine for your earholes!

Lastly, after the last show I was asked what is Nitromethane. Well, you can click that link for science, or just know that it can be a fuel for certain extreme power purposes. It has enormous energy potential as you can see in this picture of a nitro explosion back in 1999.

3 things this morning.

  1. My coffee was great and I listened to Nekromantix on my drive in.

  2. The Monday meeting at work was positive.

  3. I dig my day job, as well as my hobbies.

New! Hot Rod Horror Garage page.

HRHG Marque

That’s right! If you click on the Hot Rod Horror Garage on the navigation bar above you’ll ride straight on over to the new page for the show-within-a-show. If you’re so lazy that you can’t make your mouse pointer or slidey finger move all of that way you can also click here.

Mark and Doc Wrench, or maybe just one of them, will be writing for the PGP Show blog from now on. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised what we’re cooking up over here on the site. It’s going to be a whole lot of fun.

Go have a read and get some k-nowledge about the genesis of H.R.H.G.

Getting to Know: A Show Within the Show (HRHG).

The old tales say that somewhere, deep in the woods of Missouri near Route 66 there is a haunted garage. Long lost to normal folks, some even say it exists beyond the veil of time and space; or that it is a portal to some far away and most unwholesome land. Well, I'm here to set you straight... That isn't even the half of it!
The Garage, and our gas pump!
The Hot Rod Horror Garage was once attached to an asylum, abandoned many years ago amid a torrent of scandal and accusations of murder, torture, human sacrifice, and much more. One particularly nasty inhabitant of that asylum was known simply as 'Doc'. Turns out this fellow was quite a dabbler in many things that are best left undisturbed. In the final days, before the asylum was shut down Doc went missing, he had skulked off into the maintenance tunnels and was assumed dead.  Really what had happened was that Doc knew what was in store for him if he was caught, so he hid; just long enough for the authorities to leave.
The asylum graveyard.

What happened next isn't fully known, but somehow old Doc got tangled up in a mess with a demonic portal, and an old car that was in the maintenance garage. The car is haunted and demands frequent blood sacrifices, Doc does his best to appease it in fear of what would happen to him if he upsets the demon. After years of serving this possessed car Doc has gone quite mad, and has nearly lost all grip with reality.  The locals stories now all call him 'Doc Wrench' his reputation as a mad mechanic/scientist with a haunted hot rod is legend throughout the region.

This here is our road, if you see it; come on down!
That is where I come in, I help Doc. I'm the voice of reason, the cat that gets things done when they need doin', and the guy trying to keep Doc from going completely over the deep end. I handle the boring stuff around the garage; keeping the music rocking, arranging parties, buying supplies, working out business deals, and most importantly... luring folks out to the woods to learn the legend of Doc Wrench.  You see, if the legend is lost, no one will head way out in the woods and that makes it a lot harder to keep this blood lusting car under control. Its an important job, maybe not as exciting as being a madman, but someone has to do it. Some say I've done this for so long, I might be as mad as Doc. Some even say I am Doc, its hard to say for sure. I guess anything is possible.

Remember the barn dance? It was in here!
But enough of that boring history stuff, lets talk about the show within a show: Hot Rod Horror Garage!
After getting my feet wet with a few issues of the show I started to sort out where my ideas were working and where they don't work so well.  I've settled in on a plan to try for the next few shows and see how it works out. I won't guarantee that it will be heavy psychobilly, because quite honestly, there is a lot of great music that needs to be heard. So in addition to some psychobilly, expect to hear rockabilly, punk, horror rock, interesting hard rock, maybe some bluegrass and other strange bits. Its probably worth noting that I will often lean heavily toward hot rod themed songs, or songs that are good while driving.  I hope you enjoy the show, or have the fast forward button handy!  Ill be talking to you soon...

Here is a bonus, Doc's test still.
